Police says the city is on pace to have its safest year on record.

Top brass said Thursday that overall crime is down six percent citywide so far this year.

That is led by a drop in shootings and murders, which have each decreased by 17 percent.

Mayor Bill de Blasio credits the plummeting numbers to the NYPD's neighborhood policing policy.

"It simply creates an alliance between police and community we didn't have enough of in the past," de Blasio said. "It's the point the commissioner made: More people come to National Night Out because more people feel more deeply connected to our police. They know them by name."

Robberies, assaults, and larcenies are also down from last year.

One category that has seen an increase is sex crimes, by about nine percent.

Police said they can be difficult to enforce because family members often commit those crimes.
