New Yorkers and city police officers joined forces Tuesday for National Night Out.

The nationwide event celebrates the police and the community coming together.

It also gives officers the chance to discuss all of the programs they've added, while reminding people that it's safe to be out in their communities.

Festivities outside the 46th Precinct in the Bronx included rock climbing and face painting.

Mayor Bill de Blasio stopped by to highlight the drop in crime compared to years ago.

"Every year now, because of all the efforts of everyone here, every year, crime keeps going down. There was a time in our history when no one could imagine saying that statement," de Blasio said. "But here's the even more amazing thing: crime is going to go down even more."

Both the mayor and police commissioner visited the 46th to honor one of its own.

Officer Miosotis Familia was shot and killed last month while in her vehicle not far from the festival's location.

Police Commissioner James O'Neill took a moment to thank the community for its support.
