Law enforcement sources tell NY1 that a federal grand jury is continuing to hear testimony about the NYPD chokehold death of Eric Garner.

The Department of Justice is trying to determine if federal civil rights charges should be brought against officer Daniel Pantaleo or any other officers in Garner's July 2014 death.

Many questions have been raised regarding the investigation after Loretta Lynch was replaced by Jeff Sessions as attorney general under President Donald Trump.

Law enforcement sources tell NY1 that since the beginning of the year, the grand jury has continued to hear testimony from officers, including testimony this week about what officers did or didn't do when Garner died on Staten Island as officers tried to arrest him for illegally selling loose cigarettes.

The law enforcement source says just because a federal grand jury is hearing evidence, it doesn't mean that there will or won't be an indictment of officers. It simply means federal prosecutors are continuing to investigate the facts.

Earlier this week, the liberal organization Think Progress obtained from a source the NYPD discipline records of Pantaleo. The documents showed he had numerous citizen complaints made against him for abuse and misconduct prior to the Garner encounter.

Four of the complaints, involving a car stop as well as a stop-and-frisk, were substantiated.

The city investigated and determined which Civilian Complaint Review Board employee leaked the records, and that person was forced to resign
