The NYPD is touting 2016 as one of the safest years in decades across the city.

NY1 has learned the number of people murdered was down 5 percent last year compared to the year before.

Preliminary statistics show 335 people were murdered in 2016. That's down from 352 in 2015.

2016 would be tied as the second-lowest year with murders in modern history. There were also 335 recorded homicides in 2014.

2013 had the lowest number: 333 people killed.

As a reference point in 1990, 2,262 were killed in the city.

In terms of shootings, NYPD statistics show there were 998 incidents.

Police say that this is the first time there's been under 1,000 shootings since they started tracking them with CompStat in the early 90s.

Police say 2016 numbers can change slightly because of pending investigations.
