NY1 learned exclusively Thursday that homicides and shootings are going down in the city.

Police sources tell us that homicides have dropped 8.7 percent in the first six months of 2016.

There have been 157 murders so far, compared to 172 during the same time last year.

But that is up from 2014, when there were 150 murders during the first six months.

Meanwhile, sources tell us shootings have fallen 21 percent.

They said there have been 431 shootings so far this year, compared to 545 this time last year, and 523 during the first half of 2014.

The city police department plans on holding a news conference next week to go over the latest statistics.
