FAIRPORT, N.Y. – Just before sunrise Wednesday morning police were called to a situation Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn called “unbelievable."

"This is an unconscionable situation. When a father would take the life of his daughter, I mean it's just unbelievable to even fathom someone being able to do that,” O’Flynn said at a press briefing hours later.

Investigators say 60-year-old John Beilman shot his 27-year-old disabled daughter Nicole before turning the gun on himself in the back yard of their Fairport home on Williamsburg Drive.

"Both were deceased at the time they were found,” said Fairport Police Chief Samuel Farina. “At the time of the shooting, Donna Beilman was in the home but had not heard the shots."

Donna Beilman, John's wife and Nicole's mother, was notified by police of the scene in her back yard.

"It was a surprise to her when we brought this news to her attention as it certainly would have been in any situation,” Farina said. “She was extremely distraught about the news."

Police say the couple's daughter was confined to a wheelchair with the neurological disorder Rett Syndrome.

"She was 100 percent reliant on the care of her parents,” said Farina. “I believe as far as her communication effort, it was very difficult for her to do so."

Police say John had no prior history with police and although he left a note, they're still trying to determine a motive.

"The Fairport Police nor the Sheriff’s Office have been to the Williamsburg address for any domestic related calls in the past or any police service calls for that matter at all,” said Farina.

As for the weapon, police say they believe the shotgun used was obtained legally but their investigation is far from over.
