Tyler Castro of Newburgh appeared at Orange County Court Friday to be sentenced in the death of Newburgh teen Keyshan Gayle.

The 23-year-old was sentenced to 15 years in prison in connection with Gayle's death.

Gayle's mother was at the sentencing, and had the chance to read a statement to the court -- and Castro -- about how her son's death has impacted the community.

"I just wanted to make sure that I told him. I wanted to get across that Keyshan was a good person, and that Keyshan loved God, and that Keyshan was a role model to many people he came across," said Gayle's mother, Jennifer Bediako.

Castro previously admitted he shot Gayle outside a Newburgh deli, but said Gayle was not the intended target.
