Grammy Winner Esperanza Spalding is taking on the Cooper Hewitt Museum's permanent collection, curating a small exhibit there. The singer and bass player is known to many pops fans as the musician who beat out Justin Bieber at the Grammy Awards in 2011.

In an exclusive interview with NY1's Stephanie Simon, she invites Bieber to play with her, talks about her new exhibit, and spills the beans on how fans can collaborate with her on her next album.

Esperanza Spalding tackles the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum with the same soulful enthusiasm and eclecticism she bring to her music.

Like her recent album, the new exhibit she guest-curated is about D + Evolution. Her concept is that objects and ideas can devolve and evolve at the same time.

"This is a cool example of D + Evolution because the people who make this start with a fabric that is pre-existing," Spalding said, looking at some of her work. "It has its own pattern they imported from India, and they take little razor blades and they cut away the pre-existing fabric to get the pattern that they want."

Simon: Talk about getting some of your music fans into a museum. That has to feel good.

Spalding: My wish is that when they come into the museum, they'll want to have another adventure outside of my exhibit.

So what about those Justin Bieber fans? Are they still mad at her for beating him out in 2011for Best New Artist of the Year at the Grammy Awards?

"I've been asking like JB to come be a guest on my record. I'm just kidding," Spalding said. "But you can come jam, he can sing, he can sing."

Esperanza splits her time between Brooklyn and her hometown of Portland. But she has something special planned for her fans worldwide.

"In September, I'm going to be live streaming the creation of an album from start to finish. So we're going to come in, the cameras turn on, the red button gets hit, and whatever's is flowing that day and over the course of three days — we have 77 hours to write, record, and finish a record," she said."

"There will be lots of wonderful special guests flowing through, and when I get stuck or inspired or anything I will ask viewers on Facebook for their input and feedback," Spalding continued.

If Bieber shows up, that would definitely be D + Evolution. Spalding's exhibit is up through next year.
