This week's Scholar Athlete is a trilingual student from Brooklyn who enjoys helping keep the environment green. NY1's Michelle Yu has her story from the High School for Environmental Studies.
Jasmin Lo isn't afraid to roll up her sleeves and put full effort into making a project successful. That is why the student is a major asset at the High School of Environmental Studies. She not only has a 92 average, but she's an active community leader who contributes to graffiti removal.
“Whenever you pass by, you'll always know you did something and it feels good ‘cause you know you took part in it,” says Lo.
“She takes pride in what she does, which is a nice change and it's been a real pleasure to have her all year long,” says teacher Dwight Forquignon.
The teenager is all about making the school and the environment a better place. She enjoys participating in eco-friendly activities and taking charge at school events.
“I think she is a leader, but I think she is sort of a quiet leader. I think in her own subtle ways she stands out which makes her different from her peers,” says college counselor Jonathan Henkel.
The athletic director of the school says that Lo has been extremely valuable to the school's athletic program. In addition to being the manager for the boys basketball team, she's also captain of the girls handball team.
“Jasmin came here four years ago and the whole program has turned around,” says handball coach David Aronson. “The last two years we have carried about 13-15 players. We came in second place last year.”
Before the handball team, Lo says she never thought of herself as a leader but now she believes joining a sports team helps her social skills.
“First of all, it builds self esteem, which you definitely need when you go outside in the world like on your own. Also it builds up experience,” says Lo.
Lo also says her desire to succeed is because of her parents.
“I respect my parents a lot, so I don't want them to be disappointed them in me,” says Lo. “Even though I do have to sacrifice some things, I will feel better knowing that I did the right thing.
This fall, Lo will attend Polytechnic University and is interested in majoring in biomolecular engineering.
So for her drive in making sure she goes down the right path, Jasmin Lo is our Healthplus/NY1 Scholar Athlete of the Week.

The program, operated in conjunction with the New York City Department of Education, is open to any senior attending a New York City public high school.
