Report: Police Force To Drop To Smallest In Over A Decade
May 11, 2008
Looking to patch holes in the city budget, the Bloomberg administration is reportedly holding off on hiring a thousand new officers for the NYPD.
Earlier this year, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the NYPD would be keeping its numbers deliberately low until 2010 in order to save money.
Now The New York Post says the city budget released in May pushes back the hiring of a thousand officers to 2011 -- to save $90 million. The paper says that in addition to attrition from retirements, the city will drop the force to its smallest levels since the Dinkins administration.
Critics say the job cuts, combined with the low starting salary for officers, threaten to reverse the big drops in crime that have occurred over the last decade.
