Restaurants: Cheap Eats In The East Village
May 12, 2008

You don't have to pay an arm and a leg for a great meal in New York City. The Zagat Restaurant Guide points to hot spots where you can find delicious dishes for under $30.

Hummus Place
109 Saint Marks Place
212-529-9198
www.hummusplace.com

One eatery the guide points to is Hummus Place in the East Village, which also has two locations on the west side.

Surveyors say, this Israeli trio is a "one-note Johnny" - but oh, "what a note." Customers rave about its "out-of-this-world hummus" and other "amazing", "cheap" vegetarian snacks. Regulars add, the setups are "small and cramped", but "pleasant" service compensates.

Out of a possible 30, Hummus Place receives a 23 for food, an 11 for decor, and a 17 for service. The guide says a meal here will run you about $14.

Momofuku Noodle Bar
171 First Avenue
212-777-7773
www.momofuku.com

Next we check out Momofuku Noodle Bar a few blocks away.

Surveyors note, "addictive" noodle soups keep the "hordes" coming to this "affordable" Japanese-inspired East Villager considered a "necessary foodie experience." Regulars note, expect waits "no matter when you go."

Out of a possible 30, Momofuku Noodle Bar receives a 24 for food. The eatery moved a few doors down post-survey, so the décor has not yet been rated, but the restaurant receives a 16 for service. The guide adds a meal here will run you about $27.
