Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents say they seized millions of dollars worth of stolen statues smuggled into the U.S.
They were allegedly taken from the Indian government and were recovered in the port of Newark Wednesday.
Subhash Kapoor is accused of smuggling the statues and other artifacts into the country over the past four years.
The items are valued at close to $100 million.
"This is a thriving business, it seems, amongst people who collect these types of things," said James T. Hayes Jr. of Homeland Security Investigations New York. "We have two groups here in our office that are dedicated to investigating this type of commodity smuggling, and I can tell you that they're among the busiest groups in the office."
Kapoor is currently facing legal proceedings in his native India and could also face charges in the U.S.
