The New Jersey Assembly has approved a bill requiring out-of-state law enforcement to notify local officials about counter-terrorism plans.
The bill follows the New York City Police Department's controversial surveillance of Muslim communities in New Jersey, which sparked criticism from Muslims and a number of elected officials.
The bill is being sponsored by a police officer-turned assemblyman.
It has yet to be approved by the New Jersey Senate.
New Jersey's attorney general said he is reviewing the bill.
He previously ruled the NYPD's spying on mosques and Muslim residents did not violate any state laws.
He also claims the NYPD agreed to meet with New Jersey law enforcement to discuss operations.
The NYPD's surveillance program of local Muslim communities has reportedly ended.
