The New York City Police Department is defending itself after a newly-released 911 call revealed the department's surveillance of Muslims in New Jersey.

After the Associated Press sued, authorities released the recording and other materials, which show that the NYPD set up a safe house in New Brunswick for undercover officers.

In June 2009, a building superintendent at an apartment complex near Rutgers University called 911 and said they came across a suspicious apartment that had "no furniture, two beds, has no clothing, has New York City Police Department radios."

"We're going to do everything we have to do to protect New York City," said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly. "We're going to do it. We adhere to the constitution and we adhere to all the laws."

Muslim groups have sued to shut down the NYPD surveillance program.

Civil rights lawyers have asked a federal judge to decide whether the spying violates federal rules.
