MTA Fare, Toll Hikes Take Effect Sunday

Metropolitan Transportation Authority fares and tolls are going up overnight, meaning it will cost more to ride the subways and buses and cross some bridges and tunnels around the city.
Fares on subways, buses, the Staten Island Railway and Access-A-Ride will increase a quarter to $2.50 at 12:01 a.m. Sunday.
The 30-day MetroCard will cost $112, up from $104.
The seven-day card goes up a dollar to $30.
Also starting Sunday, the MTA will charge $1 for each new MetroCard bought at a vending machine or station booth.
Transit riders can avoid the fee by refilling the cards they already have, but they will not be charged if they turn in an expired or damaged card.
Tolls on MTA bridges and tunnels go up a 2 a.m.
At most crossings, tolls are rising from $4.80 to $5.33 for E-ZPass customers and from $6.50 to $7.50 for cash customers.
Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North riders started paying more yesterday.
Fares on the commuter rail lines went up between 8.2 percent to 9.3 percent.
