Digital ticketing could be coming soon to Long Island and Metro-North Railroads.

Proposals are being sought from companies to develop a mobile ticketing app that will let customers buy tickets right on their devices and display the tickets onscreen.

Customers would also be able to print their tickets at home.

The move would save passengers time standing in line or waiting for tickets to arrive in the mail.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority expects to award the contract by July.

A pilot program could come by the spring of next year, and a full rollout by fall 2014.
