Yellow Taxis To Have Audio Devices For Visually Impaired Passengers

The City Council unanimously approved Monday a measure requiring all yellow taxi cabs to be equipped with an audio device for telling fares for visually impaired passengers.
Those who want to pay with a credit card will be guided through that option as well.
Currently, visually impaired passengers have to take the driver's word on how much rides cost.
"A blind person has the right to the same transparency as anyone else because there's something called accountability, and they should not be left out of that dynamic," said City Councilman James Vacca of the Bronx.
The devices will be mandatory in all cabs, starting May 1.
Taxi drivers will also be required to have information on how to contact the Taxi and Limousine Commission, printed in large type and braille.
