Costco will begin accepting food stamps at its stores in Queens and Brooklyn later this summer.
The wholesale club chain is testing a pilot program in response to the troubled economy. If all goes well, any future locations in the city will be equipped to accept food stamps as payment.
The stores in Queens and Brooklyn were chosen for the trial because of the high number of food stamp recipients in the area.
Several politicians are protesting that the East Harlem store, which is still under development, is not committed to the new program.
There is no word on whether or not Costco will expand the service at any of its other 400 locations in the United States.
