A day after her history-making nomination, Judge Sonia Sotomayor has begun turning her focus to getting confirmed.

She is spending Wednesday setting up meetings with senators and holding private interviews with members of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The top Republican on the committee said today that his party will not play politics to delay the confirmation hearings, though they do plan to closely scrutinize her legal philosophy and past rulings.

"I don't sense a filibuster in the works, only if the nominee has serious problems. Those kinds of things that might happen," said Republican Senator Jeff Sessions. "But I would think that we would all have a good hearing, take our time, and do it right. And then the senators cast their vote up or down based on whether or not they think this is the kind of judge that should be on the court."

Critics are labeling Sotomayor as an activist judge, but her supporters say her previous comments are being taken out of context.

Sotomayor's former boss, Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau, says she would make a great addition to the bench.

"I think it's a great appointment," Morgenthau said. "As you know, she got her early training here in the district attorney's office and I think on the merits, she's highly qualified."

The White House wants Sotomayor confirmed before the Senate goes on recess in the beginning of August.
