Jobs hunters should prepare for a phone interview but still act natural. NY1's Employment reporter Asa Aarons filed the following report. If you're job hunting, get used to a phone at your ear. It's how many companies handle hiring and screening these days.
Yahoo's career expert Marci Alboher shared with NY1 some strategies to make your phone job interview stand out.
First, treat it as more than a casual phone call.
"Be as prepared as you would for an in-person interview," says Alboher. "Meaning you do your resume, research the company, know the position and think about the best way you can position yourself to be the best candidate."
Take the call in a private office, or if you don't have a private space, control your environment.
"Make sure you go to a place that is both quiet and private so you can be assured there are no interruptions," says Alboher. "You know nobody is eavesdropping and you can't disrupt the call for any reason."
Disruptions can come from anywhere, even from pets.
"I have a French bulldog, and he snores loudly all the time. So if I'm going to do an interview from my phone, I make sure my finance takes him out or I put him in another room," says Alboher.
Next, think about your connection.
"I would not use a cell phone. You might miss a call, disconnect a call. And I would disconnect call waiting," says Alboher.
Focus is essential. Shut down distracting windows on your computer screen.
But phone interviews also look you to get up, stretch, pace and stay comfortable.
Consider dress - if you haven't worked in days and spend your time in pajamas, you could sabotage yourself.
"I would not recommend wearing pajamas. There's research that how our we dress affects our performance," says Alboher. "Get out of your pajamas, dress like you are serious and you will feel more serious."
Lastly, once you've found the perfect room and phone, do absolutely nothing with your voice. There are few things worse then someone trying to communicate with an affected voice. Relax your neck, breathe from below, use your natural tone, and it should work best.
