President Barack Obama will soon announce his pick for Supreme Court Justice.

In an interview with C-SPAN Saturday morning, the president did not give a specific date, but administrative officials have said it could be as early as next week.

Obama said he would like to have the hearing in July so there is a new justice before Congress breaks for the summer.

"One of the things I would prefer not to see happen is that these confirmation hearings drag on and somebody has to hit the ground running and take their seat in October without having the time to wrap their mind around the fact that they're going to be a Supreme Court justice," said Obama. "I'd like to give them a little bit of lead time so that they can get prepared."

Among those considered to replace retiring Justice David Souter is Bronx-born Judge Sonia Sotomayor, who previously told NY1 she is honored to be on the short list.

Obama is looking for someone with intellectual firepower and a practical sense of how the world works and is widely expected to choose a female for the post. But the president said he does not feel weighed down by having to chose a justice based on what he calls "demographics."
