Long Island Rail Road President Helena E. Williams was nominated today to serve as the interim executive director and CEO of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
MTA Chairman Dale Hemmerdinger nominated Williams, but the transit agency's board will need to approve the nomination at its next meeting on May 27.
Williams will serve until a new MTA chairman and CEO is nominated by Governor David Paterson and approved by the State Senate.
Williams says she will not only be heading up the MTA, but she will continue her duties as president of the LIRR.
In a statement, Hemmerdinger said that Williams would be "an excellent steward for the entire transit system until a new Chairman and CEO is appointed."
A graduate of St. John's University School of Law, Williams also served as deputy county executive to Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi and worked for the MTA for 15 years.
