Emergency responders were on full alert Sunday morning in Lower Manhattan, and it was all part of a drill.

The city and the Port Authority ran an emergency response drill at the World Trade Center PATH station.

The station was shut down for several hours while more than 800 first responders took part in the exercise.

The drill simulated an explosion inside the PATH tunnel.

"If we're going to make mistakes we want to make them here, we want to learn from them, we want to build them into our plans so when there's a real situation we respond appropriately and all the kinks in the system have been worked out," said Deputy Mayor Edward Skyler.

"The main thing we're trying to evaluate is the ability of all these agencies to work together under this New York City management system. We have a lot of work going on from the very beginning of this to see how we can integrate two things -- life safety operations and intel and investigation," said OEM Commissioner Joe Bruno.

About 150 volunteers assisted in the drill by playing victims of the simulated incident.
