Mayor Michael Bloomberg has reportedly chosen Doctor Thomas Farley, an infectious disease specialist from New Orleans, to be the city's new health commissioner.
Bloomberg is expected to make the official announcement during a press conference Monday morning.
Farley is an infectious-disease specialist and department chairman from Tulane University in New Orleans.
He served as senior adviser to outgoing Health Commissioner Doctor Thomas Frieden from 2007 to 2008.
The two also paired up on an article detailing the city health department's initiatives, such as banning trans fats and requiring calorie count information in restaurants.
The mayor's office is not commenting, but on Friday Bloomberg spoke very highly of his choice, without revealing his name.
"I didn't want this city, particularly at a time when you have H1N1 on people's minds, to go without a health commissioner," said Bloomberg. "And we did a search nationwide and we found somebody that we think will be absolutely a wonderful -- one of the top commissioners for the department of health. We think this city is going to be very well protected by this person."
Doctor Farley will replace Doctor Frieden, who has been tapped by President Barack Obama to head the Centers for Disease Control.
NY1 will carry the mayor's announcement live, which is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
