Manhattan Congressman Charles Rangel threw his support in the mayoral election behind City Comptroller Bill Thompson Saturday.

Rangel said Thompson, who shares his Democratic affiliation, is the right choice for mayor, citing his ability to bring New Yorkers together.

"As comptroller he's reacher out to the community. He's looked for peace, tranquility, and unity. He brought together our parties. He's just a symbol of everything we want for mayor of this great city," said Rangel.

Thompson welcomed the endorsement, saying he can lead the city through these tough economic times.

"The decisions that the mayor makes have to benefit middle class and working New Yorkers, need to have some compassion and understanding of what faces people on a daily basis in New York City," said Thompson. "I don't believe Mike Bloomberg is that person. I believe I am the person to stand up and fight for New Yorkers each and every day."

Rangel endorsed other Democrats, including Brooklyn Councilman Bill De Blasio in his bid for public advocate and Queens Councilman John Liu in his bid for city comptroller.
