As the State Senate debates a bill that would legalize gay marriage, a new poll finds New Yorkers are evenly split on the issue.
According to a new Quinnipiac University poll, 46 percent of registered voters surveyed say same-sex couples should be allowed to get married and 46 percent say they should not.
A poll conducted in 2004 showed that 55 percent of New Yorkers opposed same-sex marriage.
More voters backed same-sex civil unions - 65 percent were in favor while only 27 percent were against them.
Quinnipiac surveyed more than 2,800 registered voters statewide from May 5 to May 11.
