The 16-year-old accused of killing radio newsman George Weber pleaded not guilty Friday during his arraignment at Brooklyn Supreme Court.
John Katehis was charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
Defense attorney Jeffrey Schwartz claims that Katehis is the victim. He charges his client was lured to Weber's apartment and that any action Katehis did was in self defense.
"It seems like Mr. Weber had this whole secret life that no one knew about," Schwartz said. "He went by the name of SmotherBoy on Craigslist, which is a way he either lured or attempted to lure other underage boys into his lair, supplied them, or at least Mr. Katehis, with drugs and alcohol, attempted to get him to do some sadomasochistic sex to him and the situation got out of control."
While Katehis's emotional parents would not comment, Schwartz said that his client is a confused teen.
"He's a normal child who might have been boasting and bragging like we all do on his Facebook page to try to look like a macho ninja person," said Schwartz.
However, prosecutors tell a very different story of how the incident took place.
Police claim that Katehis is the aggressor, and prosecutors are trying the teen as an adult, saying that the defendant admitted in court documents to stabbing Weber.
They argue Katehis arranged a meeting with Weber, after seeing an ad on Craigslist posted by the former radio host offering $60 for rough sex. In a posting on his MySpace page, Katehis said he was a fan of extreme violence.
Weber, 47, was found dead in his Brooklyn home on March 20. He had been stabbed about 50 times in the neck, back, and chest, and his ankles were bound with duct tape.
Police say Katehis was caught in upstate New York wearing Weber's clothes.
Late Friday, Katehis remained in jail on Rikers Island, awaiting his next court date in July.
His attorney requested the hard drives from both men's computers.
