First Lady Michelle Obama was honored Tuesday night as one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People at an event in Manhattan.

Also on the list was her husband, President Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Bernard Madoff and U.S. Airways Flight 1549 pilot Chesley Sullenberger.

In her remarks to the crowd, Mrs. Obama focused on the importance of public service.

"Careers focused on lifting up our communities, whether it's helping transform public schools or training workers for green jobs or helping low-income families access healthcare, these jobs are not always obvious," she said. "But at a time when our nation is facing unprecedented challenges, encouraging careers in public service and social innovation is more important now than ever."

Earlier in the day, Obama addressed diplomats and staff members at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations. She also did a taping for "Sesame Street."
