State officials have shut down two Manhattan clothing manufacturers that inspectors say were making uniforms worn by New York City Police Department members.

Officials on Wednesday said clothes manufacturer Forest Uniform and one of its contractors, Technical Garment USA, have been making dress uniforms that are worn for special occasions.

Investigators have been keeping their eye on these two companies for quite a while now but Tuesday night the department staged raids at both locations.

Officials say Technical Garment was cheating workers of overtime pay.

"While the fake timecards show employees working 35 or 40 hours in a given workweek, the real ones told a much different story," said State Labor Department Commissioner Patricia Smith. "Employees were found to be working 70 to 80 hours a week, sometimes without a day of rest."

Labor Department officials say Technical Garment owes 16 workers almost a half-million dollars. They acted on information from a worker, who asked not to be identified.

At Forest Uniform, officials say the violations include failing to register as a garment manufacturer. The NYPD said it doesn't do business with either company but authorized members of the service to privately purchase dress uniforms manufactured by Forest.

"We have suspended the authorization for them to provide uniforms," said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

Neither company could be reached for comment.

The Labor Department says the companies have about two weeks to work out a settlement to pay their workers, if they want to get their equipment and products back.
