The Tribeca Film Festival includes a tale of youthful self-discovery that took place in Brooklyn. NY1's Jeanine Ramirez filed the following report.Avery Klein-Cloud, a Brooklyn teenager, is on the road to self-discovery. Her journey to find out about herself and her place in the world is captured on film in the documentary "Off And Running: An American Coming of Age Story."
Klein-Cloud, an African-American, was adopted by white, gay, Jewish parents and attended Hebrew school.
"When you're adopted by a white family, you see things so differently," says Klein-Cloud.
She becomes curious about her black roots, her biological mother and her birth name and decides to reach out to her birth mother.
"The second I put the letter in the mailbox, I panicked. And then I calmed myself down. And now I'm going through that panicking stage again," says Klein-Cloud.
Her panicking stage is shared on a worldwide stage as the documentary premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival.
"It's a very, very intense movie that's very personal for me," says the teen protagonist.
The quest for answers creates a wedge between Klein-Cloud and her family, and the film also explores her skills on the track field.
Klein-Cloud also has two adopted brothers and jokes the family nickname is "the United Nations."
"People also have a lot of assumptions about interracial families so I think that getting to know in a very personal way how Avery dealt with all of this will help us all understand it a bit better," says director Nicole Opper.
The director followed Klein-Cloud for three years and finished the film just two weeks ago. At 19 years of age, Klein-Cloud has a new perspective.
"I definitely feel that I found who I am and I'm proud of who I am and I'm happy with who I am now," she says.
Sharese Bullock, the film's producer, says the need for self-awareness resonates with all teens and that many will be able to connect with the movie.
"Hopefully it'll help other young people in their search and their quest for their identity," says Bullock.
