Thousands of gay rights advocates rallied outside the state Capitol Tuesday.

About 2,000 people were expected to attend the rally in support of gay rights legislation, including same-sex marriage.

Governor David Paterson and a couple of New York State Assembly members addressed the group before the rally.

"One concept that is misunderstood in the world today is the tremendous struggle and the tremendous discipline and the amount of time it makes to affect social change," said Paterson to a standing ovation. "And that change is not preceded by victories, it is preceded by struggle. Sometimes it takes a disciplined effort and some losses to get to a victory."

Paterson has been a long-time supporter of same-sex marriage.

It's not clear if the bill he introduced earlier this month has enough support to pass.
