A Mexican community in Brooklyn is reacting to the recent swine flu outbreak and federal recommendations that any nonessential travel to Mexico be avoided. NY1's Jeanine Ramirez filed the following report. As Brooklyn resident Pixie Sosa gets ready to give birth next week, she's enlisted the help of her mother who is due to fly into New York this week. It may not sound unusual, but her mother is coming from Mexico City.
"She doesn't have any symptoms, any flu. She's not coughing. She doesn't feel bad. So I know she's very, very healthy," said Sosa.
Mexican authorities are asking people to stay healthy by keeping away from public places where they can be in close contact with one another. The airport and the airplane are two of those confined places.
"She's traveling and she's going to be in contact, around people that you never know if they're infected or not," said Sosa.
An advisory at the Mexican Consulate in New York is asking people if they show flu-like symptoms to visit a doctor immediately. But the Consul General, Ruben Beltran, says it's a preventative measure not meant to alarm.
"There's no reason to panic. Let's take all necessary precautions. And this is a curable disease," said Beltran.
Beltran says his office is being proactive and providing information as it receives it from Mexico. Still, at the Azteca Express travel agency in Sunset Park, people are calling concerned, and many are canceling their trips. Workers at the travel agency, however, say the airlines have been very accommodating.
"In this case, they don't have to pay any penalty. Mexicana says flights until May 1st the people can change and don't pay anything for cancelation," said Jenny Nagaky of Azteca Express Inc.
The Centers for Disease Control is recommending that any nonessential travel to Mexico be avoided.
"For those who are arriving from Mexico we would suggest that they be going to the hospital and trying to check if they have any symptoms of the flu," said Tepeyec Association Executive Director Joel Magallan.
