Authorities are investigating the cause of a massive house explosion that killed a 40-year-old mother of three in Floral Park, Queens, Friday.
It happened shortly before 5 p.m. Friday on 260th Street in Floral Park, at about the same time Con Ed crews were responding to a call of a strong gas smell in the area.
According to officials, the workers opened a nearby manhole cover right before the house exploded.
The body of the woman was found in the home.
The massive blast produced plumes of smoke that could be seen for miles, and the ensuing fire spread to two nearby houses.
"Parts of the house were flying by in the air," said a neighbor. "Then there was a bit of a fire, then in about five minutes there were flames 30 to 40 feet in the air. It was unbelievable."
Other houses in the area were also shaken by the blast.
"Everything flew out of the closets," another neighbor said. "Broken dishes were all over the floor everywhere. It was like an earthquake."
"All of a sudden the whole house just shook," said a third neighbor. "It's incredible, everything was flying."
An 80-year-old woman, a Con Edison worker and four firefighters were also injured in the aftermath of the blast.
Their injuries aren't considered serious.
