Opening arguments were held Tuesday in the trial of a woman accused of killing her fire marshal husband.

Janet Redmond-Mercereau faces charges of second-degree murder, along with charges of tampering with evidence and weapons possession.

Prosecutors say she shot husband Douglas Mercereau with his own gun in their Staten Island home in December 2007.

Mercereau has said she was asleep in the home at the time of the shooting and has denied any involvement.
