Democratic State Assemblyman Ruben Diaz Jr. has defeated Republican Anthony Ribustello in Tuesday's special election for the Bronx borough presidency.

Election returns indicated Diaz Jr. won 87 percent of the votes over Ribustello, a Republican district leader best know for his appearances on the "Soprano's"

"Let's send a strong message to the city of New York, to the state of New York that the Bronx deserves the very best," he said in his victory speech.

His win brings more power to the Bronx political family.

"To have a son as borough president, what else could I from my God Jesus," said State Senator Ruben Diaz Sr.

Diaz Jr. replaces Adolfo Carrion, who left the job to become director of the White House Office of Urban Affairs.

According to the city's Campaign Finance Board, Diaz Jr. far outspent his opponent. He shelled out more than $300,000. Ribustello spent just a little more than $4,000.

Diaz Jr. says his plan is to focus on the economy.

"While there is so much development in the borough of the Bronx, a lot of the clamor that we hear in those developments is not necessarily jackhammers, but the clamor from Bronxites who want nothing more than to work at those sites," he said.

The special election did not get much attention. Throughout the day turnout was light, at times the only people at the polling sites were Board of Elections workers.

Diaz will now serve out the remainder of Carrion's term, which concludes at the end of the year. He will be sworn in once the results are certified by the Board of Elections. That should happen within the next week.
