The captured Somali pirate involved in the hijacking of the Maersk Alabama has arrived in New York and will appear before a Manhattan judge Tuesday, according to law enforcement sources.

Abduhl Wal-i-Musi will be tried in federal court and could face a maximum of life in prison if convicted.

His mother has reportedly appealed to President Obama for his release, saying her son is only 16-years-old.

However, officials reportedly say he is at least 18-years-old, which would make it easier for prosecutors to try him in federal court.

Musi is among four Somali pirates who investigators say hijacked the Maersk Alabama and held its captain hostage for five days.

The three other pirates were killed by U.S. Navy SEALs during the rescue of Captain Richard Phillips last week.
