The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals held a block party Saturday to promote proper pet care.

Pet owners began lining up early Saturday morning on 125th Street in Harlem for a chance to have their animals spayed or neutered for free.

Organizers say it was the first time all five mobile clinics were in the same place.

The event is also offered free vaccinations for pit bulls or pit bull mixes.

"We're going to try to keep doing community outreach events, but we're always doing something," said Michelle Gomez, ASPCA director of community outreach. "So if you look at our website, ASPCA.org you can find out. We go all over the five boroughs. So you can find when's convenient for you and you can come down and see one of our vans and get your animal spayed or neutered."

Organizers say thousands of animals die in the city's shelters every year due to overpopulation.
