A new exhibit on display at the Hostos Community College called "Outsiders: Contemporary Works Of Immigrant Artists" features the work of first or second-generation immigrants.

"There is a lot of social identity and political identity that comes out through the work, in terms of who they are now, who they feel as an artist they are in the art world," said Lisa Curren of the Bronx Council on the Arts.

The exhibition is part of the sixth-annual Immigrant Heritage Week, a citywide celebration which runs through April 23rd – offering more than 180 events around the five boroughs at libraries, museums and colleges. Many of the events are free.

The week honors the experiences and contributions of immigrants in New York City.

"Immigrants have really built this city, its infrastructure, but most importantly the talent that immigrants have brought, how much they have given, to make this city and this country as great as it is," said Immigrants Affairs Commissioner Guillermo Linares.

Linares, himself an immigrant from the Dominican Republic, says the week is not just about looking back, but moving ahead.

"Our economic future and stability and, in fact, the new heights that we want this city and this country to reach relies precisely on those waves of immigrants," said Linares.
