Relatives of a schizophrenic man who, they charge, was beaten by police gathered outside a Brooklyn police station Tuesday to announce a lawsuit against the city.

Family members of Gamalier Reyes, 26, say police used unnecessary force to restrain Reyes Saturday morning when officers arrived at his apartment in Bushwick.

Police were responding to a 911 call from a social worker who said Reyes was acting violent and irrational and suggested he be taken to a psychiatric hospital.

Police say Reyes initiated a fight and they tried to restrain him. Two officers were injured.

Relatives of the victim say police went too far.

"Even though these people have mental health issues they are still human, they are still a loved person, and they should be treated as such," said Reyes' sister Zully Delacruz. "Because they have a mental illness, it doesn't make them a criminal. They're still human."

Reyes was eventually taken to Woodhull Hospital, where he is being treated for broken bones in his face.

The social worker says Reyes had just returned from the Dominican Republic earlier that day, where he suffered a head injury from a fight. But Reyes' sister claims he was not injured when she and her mother picked him up from the airport.

Police say it is unclear what injuries Reyes sustained from his struggle with police.
