A Queens teenager is recovering at home after a woman, who jumped to her death, landed on him Wednesday at the Queens Center Mall. NY1's Ty Chandler filed the following report. The bandages around 17-year-old Derrik Munoz's head cover a gash so large it required 23 staples. But Munoz doesn't remember how he ended up that way.
"All of a sudden I just blacked out, I woke up in the hospital bed asking doctors what happened," said Munoz.
Munoz and his girlfriend were sitting in two massage chairs on the lower level of the Queens Center Mall Wednesday afternoon. Munoz says he didn't notice 56-year-old Mary Lovelace, three levels up, nor did he see her take off her shoes and jump to her death off the balcony, landing on Munoz. He didn't find out what had happened until he woke up at Elmhurst Hospital.
"What makes a person do something like that, and what are the chances of her landing on me is even more amazing," said Munoz.
"It could have been a couple more inches and he wouldn't be here," said Jonathan Santana, Munoz's brother.
Munoz's brother and other family members arrived at the hospital and couldn't help but fear for the worst. Other than a deep cut on his head, Munoz didn't suffer any other serious injuries. He was released Wednesday night, and in spite of some headaches and back pain, the Long Island High School junior is doing fine.
"It's a big relief, unfortunately the other family can't say the same," said Santana.
"My condolences go out to her family," said Munoz.
Munoz is recovering in Astoria at his father's house, but the teen says come Monday he will be back at school. And since his high school is on spring break this week, he didn't miss one day because of the ordeal.
