The nation's first environmentally-friendly, multi-story industrial building has opened at the Brooklyn Navy Yards.

The building has permanently installed wind turbines to generate power, the first of their kind in the five boroughs. Additionally, the building has rooftop solar panels.

Officials estimate they will save $11,000 in energy costs annually.

"The future for us and for our children is the real world," said Mayor Michael Bloomberg. "And wind power in the city is not only possible and not only desirable, it is one of the solutions to our problem, to pollute less, be less dependent on foreign energy, oil, natural gas and coal."

Officials also announced the creation of new facility at the Navy Yards that will make sustainable products.

Bloomberg estimates that new Navy Yard projects will create 1,700 permanent jobs, 40 percent of which will be "green."
