One person is dead and another injured following an incident Wednesday at the Queens Center Mall.
Police say a 56-year-old woman jumped three stories down inside the mall's atrium, landing on 17-year-old Derrik Munoz.
"My brother and his girlfriend were just sitting in the massage chairs at the mall and she landed right on him," said Jonathan Santana, Munoz's brother. "Now he has a big gash, we don't know how he's going to be."
Munoz was taken to Elmhurst Hospital where he is said to be in stable condition.
Witnesses have told investigators that the woman took off her shoes and was mumbling before she jumped.
"She was falling head first and then she hit the floor, like right in front of my face, and the guy was sitting in the chair, he got hit. I think he broke his neck or something," said one witness.
"It was like a panic almost because people were like zombies walking around, they didn't understand what was going on, like how could someone do it. The atmosphere was very sad and gloomy," said another witness.
No one else was physically injured, but the woman's two children were with her and saw their mother die.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators will try to determine what made her want to take her own life.
