State lawmakers passed legislation Tuesday allowing the city to add 50 red light cameras to catch drivers who run traffic lights.
The city already has cameras at various intersections.
The legislation would also allow for cameras in Yonkers, Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester and Long Island.
Proponents say the cameras are aimed at improving traffic safety, but critics say they're more about increasing revenue from fines.
Red light cameras in the city have generated more than $73 million since they were introduced in 1993.
