Governors Island will be open to the public for at least another year after an eleventh-hour funding boost from the state.

The island in New York Harbor was threatened with closure after Governor David Paterson included zero dollars for it in his budget. However, the new state budget deal sets aside $7 million for the former military base.

The island, which is open to the public in the summer and fall, is operated by the city and state.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has said he wants the city to take it over.
