More than 40,000 college baseball fans got a taste of the new Citi Field Sunday as the stadium hosted its first official baseball game between St. Johns and Georgetown. NY1's Ty Milburn filed the following report.

It was the end of an era, but the beginning of a new one in Queens on Sunday.

It's the day Mets fans have been waiting years for. No it's not the actual opening day yet, but it was the first chance for fans to get a sneak peak of Citi Field -- the $800 million brand new home of the Mets.

"Beyond exciting. I have been a season ticket holder for 16 years and to look out and see all of these people excited to be here it's amazing," said Andrew Abrams, a Mets fan.

The game between college teams St. Johns and Georgetown was a draw for some in the sold out crowd of 42,000, but most fans said Citi Field was the main attraction.

"I came for the historic nature of the occasion. It's the first day of the ball park and of course it will be decades from now before you have another opportunity like this. So it's history making to be a part of," said one Mets fan.

"I'm really excited to see the Jackie Robinson Rotunda and the new field. I think it's going to be wonderful," said another Mets fan.

Some fans said while it's wonderful to have a new home to come to, they will miss Shea Stadium and all that it has meant to Mets fans over the years.

"A little sadness. I miss the blue building. It's sad to see it in rubble over there on the side. It's nothing like being in New York," said one Mets fan.

Sunday's unofficial opening day wasn't just about the fans. Mets officials say opening up Citi Field early was also a good chance for them to dot their I's and cross their T's before opening day on April 13th when the Mets face off against the Padres in their brand spanking new digs.
