A Bronx man was arrested after police say he killed a woman and injured another with a van in Midtown Manhattan Friday.
Keston Brown, 27, seen above left, was arraigned Saturday night on charges of second-degree manslaughter, felony assault and driving while intoxicated after being arrested Friday at the scene.
The Manhattan district attorney's office says he did not enter a plea and was remanded.
Police say the commercial van driven by Brown jumped the curb at East 37th Street and slammed into the two women at about 5 p.m.
Brooklyn graphic artist Ysemmy Ramos, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ramos's family members in New Utrecht, Brooklyn say she was a devoted wife and mother of three children and was two months pregnant with a fourth child. She was headed home Friday to celebrate her third wedding anniversary.
"My mind won't even explain to me what's happening. It's difficult," said Johnathan Villanueva, Ramos's cousin. "It's devastating to all of us, because she was one of the best people in our family. We have nothing compared to her... She was the one who kept the family together. She was the rock to everybody."
Villanueva said he would cherish the time he spent with Ramos and remembered her kindness, smiles and jokes.
He said he did not wish to confront Brown.
"To say anything to him, it's not going to do anything at all," said Villanueva. "What he gets is what he gets and it's what he deserves."
Building employees who witnessed the accident say the victims had just left work when the accident happened.
"They say goodnight and have a nice weekend to us and that's it," said a worker.
"We were all in the front and we said, 'Have a nice weekend,' and that's what happened, they got hit by the van," said another worker. "Supposedly the van went out of control."
The 37-year-old woman struck along with Ramos was in fair condition Saturday in Bellevue Hospital.
Brown is expected to be back in court next week.
