The world-renowned architect who designed the controversial Atlantic Yards project in Brooklyn says he doubts it will ever be built.

When Frank Gehry was asked in an interview with the Architect's Newspaper to comment on real estate developer Bruce Ratner's $4 billion plan, the architect said, "I don't think it's going to happen."

Gehry later backtracked in a statement, saying his comments should not be taken as a prediction and that he is hopeful it will come to fruition.

Ratner says he understands how some might have doubts, given the state of the economy. But he promised the arena, housing and retail development will be built.

Recently there have been reports Ratner has been struggling to raise cash for the project and that Gehry laid off all the staff he had working on it.
