Talks are reportedly progressing between the United States and Serbia over the potential return of a former Binghamton University student accused of beating a classmate.

An official with the Serbian justice ministry told the Associated Press today that discussions are going in a good direction, and he expects negotiations regarding Miladin Kovacevic to be finalized soon.

Kovacevic, 22, is charged with assault after allegedly beating Brooklyn resident Bryan Steinhauer into a coma.

Kovacevic fled to Serbia last year after being given travel documents by a diplomat in the Serbian Embassy.

Washington insists on Kovacevic being tried in the U.S., but Serbia says its laws ban extradition.

The case has strained relations between the U.S. and Belgrade.
