Life was always sweet for Denise Delgado-Brown, 51, of Yonkers, but now she says life is sweeter, after she survived an arrow fired yards away from her in Riverdale which missed her heart by an inch.

"I just thank God for giving me a second chance," she said to reporters Friday.

Last Sunday, Delgado-Brown was dropping off friends from church at a nursing home on Independence Avenue when police say Eric Collins, 27, who was moving in next door, decided on some target practice.

Collins allegedly used a bow to fire an arrow at a fence, but the arrow shot right through and hit Delgado-Brown in the abdomen, lodging seven inches deep. Surgery repaired a torn bowel.

Although her humor is very much intact, Delgado-Brown said what happened to her was not funny.

"Don't ever fool around with dangerous objects," said Delgado-Brown.

She did not view the attack as malicious, just stupid.

“Do I think it was directed towards me? No. I think it was a stupid thing to do, very much so - especially knowing that it’s a senior citizens’ complex,” said victim Denise Delgado-Brown. “That kept going through my mind - it didn’t have to be me that guy hit with the arrow."

Police say Collins might not have meant to hit anyone, but they believe he knew he had. But authorities say he pretended to know nothing when police first canvassed the neighborhood.

"I sorry that he felt that he couldn't speak up," said Delgado-Brown. "Especially when I was told he heard me screaming."

Brown will have to go back to the hospital for checkups but she is expected to make a complete recovery.
