A man who climbed the façade of the New York Times headquarters last summer pleaded guilty Tuesday to misdemeanor reckless endangerment.

David Malone was sentenced to a conditional discharge, meaning the case will be dismissed if he performs five days of community service, and is not arrested in the next six months.

Despite agreeing to the plea deal, Malone says his climb was carefully planned. He said it did not constitute reckless endangerment, and he used the publicity to warn people about a real al-Qaeda plot.

The 29-year-old was arrested in the early morning hours of July 9th after reaching the 11th floor of the 52-story skyscraper.

Malone was the third person to scale the building last year.

The incidents prompted the paper to remove some ceramic rods from the building's exterior to deter climbers.
